If you arrive at your destination, and it is not obviously accessible, the first thing to do is to seek assistance from the staff. There might be an alternative entrance. However, to avoid disappointments when you reach your destination, there are a variety of apps that wheelchair users can download to check the status of their destination as well as where to go. Alternatively, if you have a schedule in mind, you can plan ahead with these top tips.

iAccess Life App

iAccess Life is an app that allows wheelchair users to communicate and share their experiences at establishments around the world. This kind of information is essential to wheelchair users to prepare in advance if their destination is wheelchair accessible. In the event that a location isn’t wheelchair accessible, app users can share that information with the wheelchair community. This app is not only great for wheelchair users, but anyone with impaired mobility. In the iAccess Life app users can rate the parking, seating, entrance, and bathroom. This app allows for better planning when visiting hotels, restaurants, and stores. Download: iAccess Life for Android | iOS.

Wheelmap

The Wheelmap app is similar to the iAccess Life app in that it is a place for users to rate the accessibility of their destination. For wheelchair users who rely on their wheelchair as their main mode of transportation, apps like this can help them avoid locations that aren’t wheelchair accessible. On Wheelmap, users can upload pictures of the accessible locations for other wheelchair users to assess if they can visit! Wheelmap for Android | iOS

Uber

Uber is a popular ride-sharing app that you may have used before, however, did you know that they also cater specifically to wheelchair users? There is a specific option for you to choose when you need a wheelchair accessible vehicle. Whilst all Uber’s are equipped to store a wheelchair or other mobility devices in their car, you will have to request a specific car in order to use your wheelchair as a seat in a motor vehicle. In the event that your destination is not wheelchair accessible, you can always call an Uber to take you somewhere more convenient.

The safety of our wheelchair user’s is of the utmost importance, so it’s important that if you intend to travel in a car with your wheelchair, that you pick a chair that has been crash tested. This means that your chair has been approved to be used as a chair in a vehicle according to international safety standard ISO 7176-19. Uber for Android | iOS

Sharing your experience with others is an important part of accessibility. Not only with the wheelchair community, but to the businesses that you weren’t able to access in the hopes they will update their facilities. To avoid disappointment in the future, if you can plan ahead for your journey. In a previous blog, we shared some ways to check if your destination is wheelchair accessible, as well as how to reach your destination with a wheelchair. If you’re unsure about what wheelchair is most suited to you and your lifestyle, you can contact KARMA Medical.

Bathrooms are a basic necessity and should be accessible to everyone, however, for wheelchair user’s it is not always that simple. Without the appropriate adaptations and accessories, a bathroom can be a difficult and even dangerous situation. Making the bathroom accessible will also allow the wheelchair user to be more independent. The following are some simple ideas to add or include when designing an accessible bathroom for KARMA wheelchairs.

Grab bars/ Grab rails

One of the easiest ways to make a bathroom accessible is to install grab bars or grab rails on the walls. The rails give support when moving around the bathroom and to help transfer from the wheelchair to the toilet or shower. A grab rail is an affordable way to make a bathroom more comfortable and can be placed anywhere the user needs. Everyone can benefit from these grab bars, from elderly to manual, and power wheelchair users.

Open shower room

Open showers are wheelchair accessible because the shower area is on the same level as the rest of the bathroom. This kind of bathroom is also known as a wet room as the whole room can be accessible from any level. Someone who uses a shower wheelchair can move around freely, and independently.

Ideally, the shower area should be large enough to move around comfortably, with grab rails to keep the user safe. Furthermore, you can choose the type of faucet that best suits you and your needs.

Accessible bathtubs

Installing an accessible bathtub might seem like a considerable investment, as it means buying a new bathtub that suits your needs. However, choosing a lower bowl, or walk in bath, allows for easier and safer access and transfers from your wheelchair. Installing grab rails and handles around the bathtub will make it more accessible and safe. Anti-slip mats and a specially designed shower seat can also make bathing a safer experience. All of these accessories are one way to develop an independent life.

Accessible sink

Having a lowered sink with enough room to park a wheelchair underneath makes it a much simpler bathroom experience. Lowering the sink can prevent strain and injuries from reaching to use the sink. Additionally, a touchless taps and soap dispensers can make it even easier for someone with limited mobility to use the bathroom.

KARMA Medical is here to help you find the right wheelchair for you. We can also provide guidance on how to live an independent and free lifestyle. For further information on how to make your bathroom accessible, you can contact your local wheelchair dealer. You can also take a look at the KARMA Medical blog for further information to live an independent and accessible life.

The short answer is yes! Cars can be adapted to accommodate wheelchair users to gain further freedom and independence. It may come as a surprise that whose who have been paralyzed or have limited arm and hand function can have their motor vehicle and wheelchair adapted to be safe to drive.

Wheelchair accessible vehicles are a great way for wheelchair users to travel further distances that wouldn’t otherwise be possible in their wheelchair. Wheelchair users can spend funds adapting their current motor vehicle, or they can purchase a vehicle that has been designed for a wheelchair user to drive. No matter which option they choose, the safety of the user is of upmost importance.

In order for a motor vehicle to be used driven by a wheelchair user, the following features must be installed/adapted before any driving can take place:

    • There must be a way to anchor the wheelchair safely to the motor vehicle. For example, the Dahl Docking System is a safety feature that is installed on the wheelchair and in the motor vehicle. This ensures that in the event of an accident, the wheelchair user and their wheelchair will not move.
    • The vehicle must include an adapted hinged door. The entrance for the wheelchair should be adapted to accommodate the wheelchair user, e.g. wide enough.
    • There should be either a wheelchair lift system or space for a wheelchair ramp. In order for the user to safely enter and exit the vehicle safely, a wheelchair ramp can be used however, a ramp typically requires assistance. On the other hand, a wheelchair lift system can be used independently by the driver (the wheelchair user).
    • There needs to be sufficient interior space to accommodate the wheelchair. If the wheelchair user is going to enter the motor vehicle via a lift or ramp (i.e. they intend to use their wheelchair as their seat v.s. Transferring into the driver’s seat) then there needs to be enough room inside the vehicle to comfortable maneuver to the steering wheel.
    • The wheelchair must have passed a safety crash test. Not only is this imperative for the safety of the user, but also anyone else in the motor vehicle. This safety test ensure that the wheelchair won’t move in the event of an accident. In some countries, if the wheelchair has not passed the safety crash test, they are not allowed in any motor vehicle.

Adaptions to your wheelchairs might also need to be made in order for it to be safe to drive and used as a seat in a motor vehicle:

    • Specialized controls can be installed or attached to your wheelchair to make it easier to drive a motor vehicle. For example, the accelerator and brake can be controlled with one hand, and the steering wheel with the other.
    • The wheelchair must have passed a safety crash test. In order to use a wheelchair as a chair in a motor vehicle, it must have passed a safety crash test.
    • There must be a safe way for the user to transfer from the wheelchair to the driver’s seat. If the user is not planning to use their wheelchair as the driver seat, then there has to be sufficient room to make the transfer from wheelchair to chair.
    • Seat cushions can be added to increase the sitting height. It’s imperative that the user can see clearly in order to drive safely.
    • The user must obtain a valid driver’s license. It may seem obvious, but the driver must have passed their driving test in their modified vehicle.

As long these safety requirements are met, and with the approval of a doctor or therapist, a wheelchair user can drive a car. A new level of freedom and independence can be achieved should the wheelchair user want that. If you are unsure about which wheelchair is best for you, you can contact KARMA Medical to find the best wheelchair for you that is also suitable to be driven in a motor vehicle.

Standing for short periods at a time every day has numerous health benefits for wheelchair users. Not only are their physical health benefits, but there are also benefits to the wheelchair user’s mental health. If you are considering including standing rehabilitation into your daily life, consider these KARMA standing wheelchairs.

The benefits of standing wheelchairs

Physically, the benefits of a standing wheelchair include reducing pressure sores, reducing muscle soreness, and slows down osteoporosis. Sitting and laying down all day can decrease the user’s bone density that can’t be combated by only taking supplements. In order for the body to absorb calcium, the bones need to be stimulated, which is the only way to slow down osteoporosis. Therefore, standing is the only way to increase bone density and maintain healthy bones.

Not only are there physical benefits, but a standing wheelchair can also have a positive impact on a person’s mental health. A standing wheelchair increases self-confidence and the user’s sense of independence. Often wheelchair users can feel like they’re at a disadvantage because of the height difference from a sitting position, however standing puts the user at eye level with their peers. They can also access bookshelves etc. without the assistance of others, thus accelerating their freedom and independence.

SME

SME is KARMA’s manual wheelchair with power standing function. SME is the ideal for active wheelchair users who want to achieve freedom and independence and also want to take advantage of the health benefits that come along with standing. SME is a lightweight everyday wheelchair that the wheelchair user can use to practice standing at home as well as in social situations. The adjustable features such as the seat depth, back angle, and knee support make SME comfortable for every user.

SME is safe and stable to use at home or out and about because of the four touchpoints that ensure the user and wheelchair’s sturdiness. SME transitions smoothly from a sitting to standing position at a speed that is comfortable for the user.

Ergo Stand

Ergo Stand is KARMA’s iconic power wheelchair with power standing function. This compact and highly adjustable wheelchair is suitable for both use indoor and outdoors. The narrow wheelbase makes the chair easy to navigate around the home, along with the front-wheel drive wheels that make turning in small spaces simple and easy.

Not only is the Ergo Stand capable of utilizing the health benefits of standing for the wheelchair user, but the Ergo Stand can also recline 80°-120°. Reclining in the wheelchair can redistribute sitting pressure and allows the user to relax comfortably in the wheelchair.

Evo Altus

Unlike SME and Ergo Stand standing wheelchairs, Evo Altus can achieve the standing position from a lying down position. This advanced power wheelchair is equipped with all the biomechanical positioning functions (power tilt, power recline, power elevating seat, and power standing). The biomechanical positioning are ideal for wheelchair users who have been diagnosed with a progressive disease or pediatric users who require additional support.

Evo Altus can even achieve the standing position four different ways. Sit-to-stand, recline-to-stand, tilt-to-stand, and lay-to-stand. Each of these movements are made smooth and efficiently with the upmost comfort and safety of the user.

If you are unsure of which standing wheelchair to choose, you can read our previous blog about how to choose a standing wheelchair. It’s imperative to the user’s safety to consult a doctor and/or therapist before trying and purchasing a standing wheelchair. Although there are numerous health benefits, not everyone is suitable for every type of wheelchair.

As a wheelchair user, it can be difficult to find a wheelchair storage system that works for you! It’s not convenient to carry your belongings in your lap, therefore it’s important to find a bag or accessory that is both practical and functional for your wheelchair. In this blog, we are going to outline the different types of wheelchair bags and storage options.

Wheelchair backpack

Depending on the user’s preference, they can use a regular backpack on the back of a manual wheelchair via the handles. Not every backpack design is suited for this, for example, the straps of the backpack might not be adjustable to the correct length or the shape may be awkward. This solution is most suited to short term wheelchair users who might be using a wheelchair during rehabilitation.

Long term manual wheelchair users will often opt for a wheelchair backpack that has been specifically designed for use on a wheelchair. In 2022, there are a variety of brands designing storage solutions especially for wheelchair users. A backpack designed specifically for a manual wheelchair will have shorter straps designed to hang securely from the push handles.

Similarly, power wheelchair users can also seek backpacks made specially for their wheelchair type. KARMA power wheelchairs have an additional backpack hook that can be installed to the back of the wheelchair to securely hang any bag design from backpacks to tote bags.

Net bag storage

Some manual wheelchair user’s may opt to store their belongings under the wheelchair with a net storage bag. This accessory is unintrusive and creates space for additional storage. When going up a ramp, it’s important to note that items may fall out if not stored securely.

Armrest bag

An armrest back is a great way for long term wheelchair users to store their valuables such as their phone, wallet, and keys. Keeping your personal belongings where you can easily access them at all times will give the user peace of mind when they are out and about. The material used to manufacture these bags are lightweight and easy to clean.

Tote bags

Tote bags are both stylish and convenient for additional storage. For example, a tote bag is a great place to put a jacket, water bottle, or groceries. They can easily hang from the push handle or the previously mentioned backpack hook. We wouldn’t advise wheelchair users to store their valuables, as most tote bags don’t have a secure closure.

There are many storage options for wheelchair users to choose from! From a place to store your valuables to additional storage that you might need when you’re out and about. There are many ways to personalize your wheelchair to show off your personality, the wheelchair bag you choose is a great way to do that! Ask about KARMA Medical accessories when choosing your wheelchair!

Parking spaces that have been reserved to people with reduced mobility must meet a list of basic requirements so that they have been completely adapted to people with a physical disability and/or reduced mobility. The main objective of these reserved parking spaces is that they are located close to the place they need to access. Both the location and size of the parking space are of great importance so that access and exiting the motor vehicle can be carried out comfortably.

Where should the parking spaces for people with disabilities be located?

The reserved parking spaces must be close to the location they intend to access. For example, if it is a hospital car park, then the parking spaces nearest the entrance should be reserved for those with reduced mobility. The intention is to avoid a person with disabilities from walking through a car park, which in certain circumstances, could be dangerous.

What are the recommended dimensions for an accessible parking space?

There are usually specific regulations that must be met when it comes to the measurements of the parking space. Each country may be different, for example in the USA vs the U.K. In general, the minimum length for an accessible parking space should be 5 meters long and 2.2 meters wide. It should also be mentioned that the area of approach should be an extra 1.5 meters in the lateral and rear areas.

An example of a reserved parking space with lateral access to a pedestrian path.

The reason for these standard measurements is so that entry and exit to the motor vehicle can be carried out comfortably. Power and manual wheelchairs can be bulky, so it’s important that they have enough room to be maneuvered. Some motor vehicles have been adapted to include a ramp or lift systems to get in and out of the vehicle. It’s essential that the accessible parking space have enough room and distance from neighboring vehicles.

It is worth pointing out that, these are minimum measures, that is, the measurements indicated above can be extended, to offer a larger space to people who make use of a parking space for people with reduced mobility.

Who can use accessible parking spaces?

In addition to knowing the structure requirements, it’s essential to remember the conditions of using the accessible parking spaces. They are reserved for people with disabilities who also hold the appropriate parking permits. In order to use handicapped parking spaces, often they require a parking permit. Each country will have their own list of requirements and process to acquire a permit. These permits are also not limited to wheelchair users, but extend to anyone who has reduced mobility and some diseases.

KARMA make it possible for freedom and independence

It’s important to remember that there should be reserved parking spaces for those with reduced mobility for their safety. Not only this, but having the correct mobility solution is also essential for a wheelchair user’s freedom and independence. KARMA Medical has a wide range of products to suit a wide range of mobility users.

Reasons for renting a wheelchair vary from wanting to try a wheelchair before committing to buying one, needing a wheelchair for rehabilitation, or just needing a temporary lightweight wheelchair for travelling. No matter the reason, the fit, and function of the wheelchair are the same across the board. Here are a list of features to look for when renting a wheelchair.

Available accessories

When you are renting a wheelchair, there can be limitations on the level of customization because there will be other users intending to use it after you, so typically the wheelchair you get will be pretty basic. However, there are wheelchairs on the market compatible with a wide range of accessories to make your ride more comfortable. For example, the Flexx wheelchair series has been designed together with a wide range of interchangeable accessories such as a variety of footrests and armrests for ultimate comfort.

Adjustable fit

When using a wheelchair, whether it be your own or one that you are renting, it should properly fit you. In order for a wheelchair to fit you, the wheelchair features need to be adjustable, for example, the seat depth, seat width, and adjustable backrest. These simple adjustments could be the difference between a comfortable sitting experience or one that causes injuries!

S-Ergo 106 is a great example of a wheelchair that can be adjusted for the comfort of the user. Not only is it equipped with KARMA’s patented S-Ergo seating system but the S-Ergo 106 has an adjustable backrest angle that can be adjusted without any tools for ultimate comfort and support. On top of that, S-Ergo 106 is also compatible with a wide range of accessories.

Foldable

A common desirable feature of a wheelchair is for it to be foldable. A wheelchair that is foldable can be more easily transported or stored when not in use. KARMA have both manual and power wheelchairs that can be folded and fit in the trunk of a car. For example, KP 25.2 and eFlexx are foldable power wheelchairs with removal components that make it easier to carry. If you are renting a wheelchair for travel, this function is especially desirable.

Positioning and pressure relief

In some cases, a rental wheelchair is required for rehabilitation and recovery. A wheelchair with multiple positions and backrest support is an excellent way to encourage a speedy recovery. MVP 502 is a positioning manual wheelchair that can be folded as well as reclined for resting and relieving hip pressure from sitting in the chair for long stretches of time. VIP 2 is a 2-in-1 reclining and tilting position wheelchair that provides pressure relief in 2 different directions. Reclining the backrest relieves hip pressure, and tilting the chair redistributes overall body pressure by shifting the center of gravity.

Crash test approved

KARMA wheelchairs are crash tested in accordance with international safety standard ISO 7176-19. This means that the wheelchair is suitable to be used as a seat in a motor vehicle for transportation. In order for the user to safely travel in the wheelchair, all wheelchair tie-downs and occupant restraints must be applied according to the user manuals. If you are planning to use your rental wheelchair in a motor vehicle this way, it’s important that your chair has been crash test approved.

Whether you are looking for a long-term or short-term rental, all of these features should be taken into consideration. It’s extremely essential to find a wheelchair that fits you and your lifestyle. Contact your local KARMA Medical wheelchair dealer who can help you choose a wheelchair as well as recommend wheelchair rental.

Wheelchair access ramps are necessary for all public places from hospitals, restaurants, and businesses to private properties like a person’s home. These ramps are necessary for the freedom and independence of wheelchair users, scooter users, or even people using a walker. Ramps also provide a safer way to enter an area that could otherwise pose an accident-prone environment.

There are different wheelchair ramp styles for different purposes on the market. It’s important to take into account the needs of the user from where they will be using the ramp as well as details of their wheelchair or mobility scooter. The basic requirements for a wheelchair access ramp are covered in a previous blog where the width, length, and slope angle are all covered. This blog is going to share the types of portable wheelchair ramps available on the market.

Singlefold ramp

A singlefold ramp is the most basic ramp, ideal for heights starting from 2.5CM to 15CM. This makes it ideal for bridging gaps such as a curb, porch, or single step. A singlefold ramp can weigh anything from 3KG to 13KG and can be used by wheelchair users, scooters, and people with walkers.

Multifold/trifold ramp

A multifold ramp is more heavy duty and ideal for higher rises. It can be folded in multiple ways for convenient storage. The overall longer length allows the ramp to be used over multiple steps or even for access into a motor vehicle. The length is longer than a singlefold ramp nevertheless it is still convenient to fold and store.

Suitcase ramp

A suitcase ramp can be easily taken apart or folded for storage. It is a versatile ramp that can be used to overcome a number of obstacles such as curbs, steps, and bridging entryways for wheelchair and scooter users. The suitcase ramp has a handy handle for easy transportation.

Bariatric ramp

This ramp is especially reinforced for greater stability over larger gaps. The reliable and sturdy structure can support even the most substantial wheelchair or scooter. The reinforced joint hinges along with other safety features make a bariatric ramp a top choice.

If you are renting a property or lack the funds to install a permanent concrete ramp, a portable ramp is a great and safe alternative. If you are unsure which type of ramp best suits your needs, you can talk to your local ramp store as there are some safety requirements that need to be met such as the maximum weight limit of the ramp, slope angle that your wheelchair can drive etc. You can find these details about your KARMA mobility device on the product page on the KARMA Medical website

A wheelchair access ramp must be adapted to meet the needs of all types of people whether it be for power wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs, mobility scooters and the elderly. It’s important to take into account the needs of these mobility users and provide them with equipment and facilities that are not only accessible but also safe for them to use. This blog will cover the characteristics of a suitable wheelchair access slope.

Measurements for a wheelchair access ramp

Length of a wheelchair access ramp

Generally, a fixed ramp cannot be longer than 9 meters. The reason for this is that if the slope is longer than nine meters, it can require excessive effort for a person who needs to manually propel their wheelchair. In most cases, it is necessary to have a ramp that is longer than 9 meters, which is why there are flat sections throughout that serve as a rest point for the wheelchair user. These breaks must be at least 1.5 meters to be a sufficient rest break.

Width for a wheelchair access ramp

The minimum width of a wheelchair access ramp must be 1.2 meters, this refers exclusively to the surface that the wheelchair can access. The reason for this is so that the ramp can accommodate all types of wheelchairs. Although 1.2 meters is the minimum requirement, however, most wheelchair ramps have a width of up to 1.5 meters.

Wheelchair access ramp slope

The slope or angle of a ramp depends on the length of the ramp.

  • If the ramp is less than 3 meters, the incline should be no greater than 10%.
  • If the ramp is between 3-6 meters, the maximum slope incline should be no greater than 8%.
  • If the ramp is between 6-9 meters, the maximum slope incline should be no greater than 6%.

It’s extremely important to follow these regulations, as they exist for a reason! If a slope is uneven or too steep, this can cause accidents for people with disabilities and cause additional difficulties for access instead of being a solution for people with mobility limitations.

Often, only the length and width of a ramp are taken into account when designing a ramp. However, the gradual slope of all sections of a ramp is essential for anyone to safely travel. Another details often missed by ramp designers include:

  • The transverse of the slope must be less or equal to 2% to prevent the wheelchair from sliding sideways.
  • The floor must be non-slip to prevent falls.
  • On either side of the ramp, for the entire length, the ramp must have a protective barrier of at least 12 CM high to prevent a wheelchair from derailing.

Wheelchair access ramp railing

The wheelchair access ramp must have a double handrail on either side of the slope. One between 90-105 CM and another between 70-95 CM. The distance between these rails should be 20CM. The handrails should also be extended on either end for 30CM, so people can have something to hold onto before they start their descent or ascent.
